Do I Need Upper Body Strength to Start Pole Dancing?

Almost everyone who walks into our Newmarket studio for the first time says some version of this: "I can't even do one push-up, is this going to be a disaster?"

Short answer: no. You do not need upper body strength to start pole dancing. If you did, nobody would ever start — including most of the people you see doing impressive things on a pole today. They started exactly where you are.

Here's what actually happens in a beginner class. Your first sessions are built around the stuff you can already do: walking around the pole, learning to grip it, basic spins, and floorwork. You're learning coordination and technique, not hauling your full body weight into the air on day one. The strength comes as a side effect of showing up.

That's the part people get backwards. They think they need to get strong first, then start pole. In reality, pole is how you get strong. The first few weeks, your forearms and shoulders will feel it — that's normal, that's the adaptation happening. Within a month or two of consistent classes, students are shocked at what their bodies can do. Not because they did extra push-ups at home, but because the classes themselves are the training.

What about pull-ups, gym background, athletic history? None of it is required. We've had students start who hadn't exercised in years, and students who came from serious gym routines and were humbled in the first ten minutes because pole uses muscles and grip in ways nothing else does. Everyone starts at the beginning. The only real prerequisite is being willing to feel awkward for a little while.

Our Intro to Pole class is designed for true beginners — no experience, no fitness baseline, no tryouts. And if you catch the bug (most people do), Pole Academy gives you a structured progression so you're always working on the right thing at the right level instead of guessing.

So if "I'm not strong enough" is the thing standing between you and booking: it's not a real barrier. It's the exact reason to start.
