What Actually Happens in an Intro to Pole Class
The unknown is the scary part. So here's exactly what happens when you walk into an Intro to Pole class at Body Evolution Studios — no surprises, no mystery.
You walk in and get oriented. You'll be shown around, introduced to the poles, and the instructor will run through the basics: how the class flows, what to expect, and the one big safety rule — no lotion on your skin, because grip matters.
Warm-up. Like any physical class, you start by warming up — light movement, joint mobility, getting blood flowing. Nothing intense, just preparing your body.
Drills. After warm-up, you'll run through strength training and conditioning drills — building the strength and body control that everything else in class is built on.
The fundamentals. This is the bulk of the class. You'll learn how to stand, walk, and grip the pole properly — which sounds simple until you try it, and then it's genuinely fun. From there: basic spins, transitions, and simple floorwork. Everything is broken down step by step. The instructor demonstrates, you try it, they correct your form. Nobody is thrown into anything.
What you will NOT be doing: climbing to the ceiling, hanging upside down, or anything that requires strength you don't have yet. Inverts and climbs come later in your progression, when your body is ready. Intro is about foundations — and foundations are where the fun actually is, because everything clicks fast at this stage.
Dance it out. Before cool-down, there's time to just play — put on the music, enjoy what you learned, and let loose. No instruction, no correction, just you and the pole having fun.
Cool-down and stretch. Class wraps with stretching, which your body will thank you for the next day.
The vibe. This is the part people worry about most, so let's be direct: nobody is judging you. We don't do mixed-level classes — everyone in the room is a beginner, training alongside people at exactly the same level. The atmosphere is supportive and the music is good. Wear leggings, a tank top or T-shirt, a sports bra, and socks, bring water — that's the whole dress code.
After class. You'll probably be a little sore in places you didn't know existed (forearms, mostly). That's normal. You'll also probably be buzzing — there's something about nailing your first spin that hooks people. If you want to keep going, Pole Academy is our structured progression that takes you from these fundamentals all the way up, level by level — or work through the levels in drop-in classes.
Our Newmarket studio's students have given us 98 Google reviews at 4.9 stars, and a lot of them mention how welcome they felt walking in nervous. That's not an accident — it's how we run the room.
