What to Wear to Your First Pole Class
This is one of the most common questions we get before a first class, and the answer is simpler than people expect. You don't need special gear. You don't need to buy anything. Wear what you'd wear to any workout, with one small twist.
Here's the list:
- Leggings — full length or capri, whatever you own
- Tank top or T-shirt — something you can move in
- Sports bra — you'll want the support
- Socks — yes, socks; you'll see why in class
- Water — bring a bottle
That's it. That's the whole packing list.
Now, the question behind the question: "Do I have to wear shorts?" No. Not for your first class. For Intro to Pole, leggings are completely fine — most of what you're learning keeps you in contact with the floor, and your legs aren't doing the gripping yet.
Later on, as you progress into climbs and inverts, you'll notice experienced students wearing shorts. There's a practical reason: bare skin grips the pole. Your inner thighs and the backs of your knees become contact points, and fabric slides. But that's a bridge you cross when you get there, and nobody expects a first-timer to show up in booty shorts. Wear the leggings. Be comfortable.
A few things to skip: lotion or oils on your skin that day (you'll slide right off the pole), rings or bracelets (they scratch the poles and your skin), and anything with zippers or hardware that could catch.
What about shoes? Socks are perfect for your first class. You'll see experienced students in platform heels eventually — that's a whole style of its own — but it comes much later, if ever. Nobody expects heels on day one, and honestly, learning in socks is easier.
Can I bring a friend? Absolutely. Most people feel better walking in with someone, and half the room probably did the same thing. Just make sure they book their own spot too.
Honestly, the dress code anxiety is really just first-day nerves wearing a costume. Everyone in the room was new once. Nobody is looking at what you're wearing — they're too busy concentrating on their own spin.
